Compute billing

Compute tier and selected server resources.

Storage and performance

Provisioned storage and performance options.

Backup costs

Backup storage up to 100% of provisioned server storage is included; excess is billed. Geo-redundant backups count both copies.

Availability setup

Primary and standby can use the same zone or separate zones, subject to regional support.

Automated backup retention

7–35 days, with a 7-day default. This defines the point-in-time restore window.

Restore target

Point-in-time restore creates a new server in the same region. Reconfigure required server parameters and firewall rules before reconnecting the app.

Backup copies and export

Managed backup files cannot be exported. Use pg_dump and pg_restore/psql for a portable logical copy.

Check before choosing

Match the compute tier, availability setup, and backup policy before comparing rates.

When to consider Flexible Server

Our recommendation is to evaluate Flexible Server first when your application already runs on Azure and needs managed PostgreSQL. Confirm your database version, extensions, target region, and recovery needs before choosing a configuration.

A compute tier describes part of the setup. It does not prove the database can handle a particular application workload or number of users.

Make availability an explicit choice

Decide whether the app requires a primary and standby. Check the region’s supported zone configuration and the selected compute tier. Match those choices when comparing another provider’s database.

Our recommendation is to document the acceptable interruption and restore window before enabling extra resources. Availability and recovery protect against different problems.

Choose the backup workflow

Automated backups provide a defined restore window. A separate export workflow is needed when you want a portable logical copy of the data. Check these workflows independently when planning a migration or retention policy.

Use the official backup documentation to check current behavior and limits, then test the process with your own database.

Prepare a complete cost request

Record compute resources, runtime, storage, performance requirements, standby configuration, backups, and networking. Compare the recurring bill before applying credits or commitment discounts.

The official pricing page describes billing options. The AWS RDS comparison provides the decision framework for a second option.
